Activity Report of the IEEE/CSS IAC to BoG

Eduardo F. Camacho

May 7, 2003

    1. The committee met in December, at the CDC in Las Vegas with a good attendance . We discussed mostly the issues of active groups in control, results of a meeting with IMS officials during the b’02 in Barcelona and the country of the month initiative.
    2. The idea of publishing a series of reports about the state of control in different countries of the world to be published in the IEEE CSS CSM under the heading of "Control around the globe" (the heading was suggested by Tariq Samad) was discussed. The results of the discussion was:
      1. The IAC believes this idea is very important for the main objectives of the Committee.
      2. Several members of the Committee (B. Pasik-Duncan, D. Atherton, E. Fernandez, L. Gerencser and E.F. Camacho) would act as a Editorial Committee for the series (seeking and tracking contributions, suggesting modifications ....)
      3. The reports were going to be prepared by one or few authors rather than a chapter.
      4. The reports should have a more journalistic approach than a mere description of groups, people and research lines.
      5. The first report to be commissioned to Alexander Frakov (Russia). This first report would serve as a model for future contributions. A first draft of this report has been produced and is now been circulated.
    3. There is some problem for Iranian citizens in the IEEE as their memberships are being cancelled. IEEE is following US Government Policy in cancelling those memberships. Iranian "former" members are no longer qualified for support for hotel/registration at the CCA in Turkey. A number had applied for that support and are now being turned down. The implications of this will be discussed at the next IAC meeting in Denver.
