Activity Report of the IEEE/CSS IAC to BoG

Eduardo F. Camacho

Nov.  8, 2004

The committee met at the ACC in Boston (June 30, 2004) with a good attendance. The Committee discussed the following points:

ˇ       IEEE International Membership was discussed in the context of a study presented by the vice-president of MAB.  It seems necessary to assess the situation regarding international membership. The feeling was that there was also a drop of membership, especially worrying in the case of student members. Possible actions to increase international membership were discussed:  Increase services, special offers as done commercially  (such as a free registration for every 4 or 5 new registration ...), advertising at international conference, student flyer distribution to chapters, sponsoring international conferences such as the Latin -American control conference (in connection with Distinguish lecturers program). The general feeling was that drastic actions were needed to attract people to the society.

ˇ       List of Active control groups: Ways of increasing the participation of those groups in IEEE/CSS activities and also to maintain the list and the addition of new groups were discussed. Also some measures in coordination with the travel support program were discussed.

ˇ       Control around the Globe: This initiative consist of getting a series of reports about the state of control in different countries of the world to be published in the IEEE CSS CSM under the heading of "Control around the Globe". There seems to be a difficulty in getting enough contributions.

ˇ       Distinguished Lecturers Program: The Committee fully support the program and some ideas of how to make this program better known were discussed.  The topic was later discussed by e-mail and the results of the discussion transmitted to the VP of MAB

ˇ       Travel Support Program: The possibilities of modifying the Program and its implementation where discussed. The general opinion of the Committee was that the IAC fully support the program main objectives, although changes in the procedures may be advisable in order to facilitate the implementation to Conference organizers. A further discussion was carried out by members of the Committee and some proposals were sent to the VP for MAB.
