ECC 97 has been organised by the Belgian Interuniversity Attraction Pole IV/2 (funded by the Federal Ministry of Science) and by the Center for Systems Engineering and Applied Mechanics (CESAME), a research centre of UCL. The practical organization was in the hands of a Federal Organizing Committee, made up of 18 members representing most Belgian universities as well as IBRA-BIRA (the Belgian member organization of IFAC), under the supervision and coordination of the two Chairmen of the Conference, Professors Georges Bastin and Michel Gevers (UCL).
ECC 97 has been sponsored by the European Union (DGXII), the Communauté Française de Belgique, the Région Wallonne, the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO), the Ministère de la Politique Scientifique and the Université Catholique de Louvain.
ECC 97 was the fourth European Control Conference. The first took place in Grenoble (1991), Groningen (1993) and Rome (1995). About 650 participants attended the first and second conference, while nearly 800 participants attended ECC 95 in Rome. 781 participants attended ECC 97. The number of participants per country is given on page 10 of this report, while a full list of all participants and their affiliations is given as Appendix A. The continuous and growing success of the European Control Conferences and the large number of European participants confirm the need and usefulness of a major periodic conference in Europe covering all areas of systems and control. Many of the European participants do typically not attend the other major broad-spectrum control conferences that take place on a yearly basis in the USA.
The technical programme of ECC 97 included 3 plenary and 6 semi-plenary lectures of one hour each, 3 mini-courses of four hours each, as well as 720 contributed papers and 24 invited papers that were selected from a total of exactly 1,000 submissions. The invited and contributed papers have been arranged in 120 sessions, with 12 sessions running in parallel at any given time. These sessions essentially covered all major areas in Systems and Control.
The scientific highlights of the Conference were the 9 plenary and semi-plenary lectures, which were of very high quality. The programme of these plenary lectures was as follows.
A novelty of our programme format was the holding of a plenary lecture (by Professor P.V. Kokotovic) as the closing session of the conference. This proved to be a success: this closing session attracted an audience of about 350.
On Thursday 3 July, a special Industry Day has been organized. This was a major new initiative of ECC 97. The aim was to bring control applications closer to academic research, focusing on quality application-oriented contributions. The European Control Conference ECC 97 Industry Day started with the plenary lecture on Industrial Feedback by Dr. Martin Steinbuch, followed by 36 presentations reporting on genuine industrial applications. 70 papers had been submitted to the Industry Day. Only those that had at least one author from industry were selected for the Industry Day sessions. Others were moved to the regular programme.
